Phayao (พะเยา) is one of Thailand’s seventy-six provinces lies in upper northern Thailand. Nan, Phrae, Lampang, and Chiang Rai are the neighboring provinces are. Laos is In the border of northeast it borders.
Phayao is a small town but it contains many hidden treasures inside. It is just like the lungs city in the northern Thailand. Let us bring you to find the treasure in Phayao.
- Kwan Phayao (กว๊านพะเยา)
Kwan Phayao or Phayao Lake is the 1st largest lake in northern Thailand and the 4th largest of the whole country. I think this was already worth us to visit it. Kwan Phayao was built to keep water during rainy season and use during dry season.
Kwan Phayao is located in the middle of Phayao Province which surrounded by mountains. The amount of water is about 29.40 million cubic meters. There are more than 45 species of fresh-water fishes. Since Kwan Phayao play an important role of fish breeding where picked fish is well-known in Phayao and help the economy of Phayao.
Beside of walking or riding a bike to visit Kwan Phayao, I advise you to sit in a paddling boat which takes around 20 minutes. Although it is just 20 minutes, you will find something that is worth to go. For example, to pay respect to Luang Pho Sila statue, which is over 500 years old and was found under the water in 1983 in Wat Ti Aram. In order to let us to pay respect to Luang Pho Sila, the statue was moved back in the middle of Kwan Phayao in 2007.
If you want to view Kwan Phayao in the most beautiful way, you must go there during Makha Bucha Day, Wisaka Bucha Day and Asalaha Bucha Day. Since these three days are the important days of Buddhism, the lake are full of candles, lights, and the reflection of the moon. However, remember to check the date of these important days since every year is not the same.
- Wat Si Khom Kham (วัดศรีโคมคำ)
Sri Khom Kham is also known as Wat Tung Aieng and Wat Phra Chao Ton Luang which was built in 1524.
You can’t imagine how gorgeous of Sri Khom Kham Temple is. When you step inside, you will first see the vihara which is the highlight and the largest building in the temple. After you go inside, you will see the largest Chiang Saen Buddha statue called “Phrachao Ton Luang”. The statue is 16m high, 14m wide in the angular local style of 15th & 16th centuries. There are also 38 Buddha heads surrounded the statue, some are even in Phayao pink sandstone (14 century)
- Phu Langka Forest Park (วนอุทยานภูลังกา)
Phu Langka Forest Park (วนอุทยานภูลังกา) makes you have sightseeing on mountaintop. It is a famous attrations in Phayao province which you can never skip this one. The main attraction that will make you feel excited is the ‘sea of fog’ (full of clouds in the shy just like cloud sea) in the morning. Phu Langka Forest Park is about 12,480,000 sq. m and it’s about 900 – 1,720 m higher than the sea level.
If you want to have a perfect spot of the ‘sea of fog’. you must need to go to PHU TEWADA, which is the highest mountain (about 1,720 m higner than medium sea level). However, you need to go in winter in order to get this amazing view. (Winter: November to February)
After looking at this beautiful sunrise, you must go to Namtok Tat Pho Waterfall. Although it is not very large. However, it still have 2 levels (one is 30m and the other is 20m).
If you like being in nature, you must go to the famous trail of Phu Langka Forest Park.
1)Nam Tok Tat Pho–Tham Ya (1.5 km and 1.5 hrs on foot)
2) Nam Tok Tat Pho–Pha Ngoi (1.8 km long)
3) Nam Tok Tat Pho-Chedi Kong Khao Si Bun Nao (long that need to take 2 days)

You can go to Magic Mountain Café (famous cafe of phayao province) before you go to Phu Langka Forest Park. The shop is a small wooden house with great atmosphere and beautiful view. In Magic Mountain Café, you can view Phu Langka with a cup of coffee. Besides Cafe, you can also stay overnight to see the ‘sea of fog’
- Than Sawan Waterfall (น้ำตกธารสวรรค์)
You must go to visit Than Sawan Waterfall if you feel stress. Water always make us feel relax and get rid of stress. Than Sawan Waterfall is located in Doi Phu Nang National Park. The waterfall is 20m high and 30m wide (due to season). The waterfall is surrounded by huge trees and the most attractive is the water fall down which make a pool with green water. You can go to play into the cool water but be careful to get sick.

- Wat Nantaram (วัดนันตาราม)
Wat Si Khom Kham is an important and a historical temple in Phayao. However, Wat Nantaram is a temple in Tai Yai art which help us to learn various types. Nantaram Temple was once known as Wat Chong Kha.
Inside, there is a Lord Buddha statue and also Phra Chao San Sae which is from the period of Chiangsaen. Beside, there is also a museum of antiques in the temple where you can see old things like old money, old utensils that you ever seen. When you see those old things, you will feel surprise and make us feel we are young. You must also need to go to visit the large white pagoda too.
